Denver School of Science & Technology: Byers – Creating a Culture of Dignity

April 21, 2022

Charlie Kuhn Headshot

Creating a culture of dignity must go beyond slogans, posters, and programs that don’t have real-life applications or only exist briefly and then disappear. This is why it is so common for adults to be reluctant to invest their time or energy and young people find them irrelevant.

A principle-based approach gives people the structure and flexibility to turn common social challenges into teachable moments where everyone’s dignity is affirmed. With this as a foundation, adults (parents) and young people can learn the skills to understand emotions, manage conflicts, create appropriate boundaries, and effectively advocate for themselves. In this environment, strong and supportive relationships help children thrive.

This workshop will cover:

  • Using the words respect and dignity to transform relationships
  • Identify dynamics that lead to social conflict
  • Repairing and strengthening relationships after making mistakes or assumptions while maintaining others’ dignity
  • Demonstrating ethical authority
